Akita Inu was declared — for the first time as dogs — a Japanese National Monument in July 1931. Among all the dog breed designated as a Japanese National Monument (Shiba Inu, Kishu Ken, Shikoku Inu, Hokkaido Ken, and Kai Ken), Akita Inu is the only large breed dog.
